Hunter and I were skiing around and managed to catch Adam Hall at the bottom of the chairlift. Hunter being his biggest fan started calling out to Adam and asking him a bunch of questions. At the top of the chairlift I asked Adam if we could follow him down for a run. Trying our best to stay in his tracks, Hunter and I were able to say we skied like Adam Hall! What made this moment so much more memorable was the excitement this brought to Hunter. That moment is what made me understand how important our role as volunteers is to help facilitate that experience in others."

Otago Wheelchair Basketball on the rise!

In Mid July 2018 ParaFed Otago sent a Basketball team up to Christchurch to compete at the Canterbury Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. He became involved with athletics and swimming very soon after and in addition John started training in martial arts in 1975, and has been training ever since.

In 1977 John became a green belt in karate and represented New Zealand at the FESPIC Games in Parramatta Australia. He participated in track and field, and swimming, and he attained 4 Gold and 2 Silver medals in the swimming events.

Three years later in 1980, John completed a marathon in 4 hours and 14 mins. He also became a black belt and started teaching Karate 2-3 times weekly.

John has always loved the martial arts and he believes that the key to his success was his state of mind. He never doubted himself and knew he could do anything; it was a case of mind over matter. He spent hours visualising his moves, problem solving and overcoming all challenges.

When John first started Karate there weren’t many others participating in wheelchairs; potentially, only one or two in New Zealand. He believes the main contributor to this situation was people perception towards doing Martial Arts in a chair being too hard. John is living proof this is not at all the case.

John was graded to 6th degree black belt in2016 and has been widely recognised for his achievements and dedication to martial arts and sport. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame you need to be selected by other members already in the Hall of Fame, reflecting the high esteem John is held in by his peers. I was so impressed with the way they improved with each game. You could see them thinking and planning with each move. The fact that the boys were winning sets against players who had been playing for over twenty years is incredible! They were not just participating, they were holding their own ground and making the older players sweat.

One thing I admired from the boys was their smiles. They were so happy to be there and be a part of the competition. Their positive attitude was very infectious. When the boys played everyone from Dunedin and Canterbury was cheering for them.

I would particularly like to say thanks to the Dunedin and Canterbury Boccia teams for taking the time to teach our boys strategies and tactical play; it was so inspirational to watch. We have also continued to provide more sporting opportunities as well as a better quality service to our members.

As most of you will be aware we are still developing as an organisation that is sustainable and capable of delivering the service we know we are capable of.

We have been very fortunate to secure new members to our committee who are all working extremely hard to ensure we are equipped well enough to strive into the future.

We have had a wonderful amount of success this year below are highlighted some of the top stories from this year.

Junior Disability Games – Parafed Otago provided the back bone and imputes to take a team of 15 young athletes to the 2015 Halberg Junior Disability Games. All of our athletes performed admirably and competed with a wonderful spirit; this was recognised by the events managers as we were awarded the team spirit award for 2015.

We had some magnificent individual performances at the games with a couple of athletes identified as potential Paralympians for the future.

Snow Sports – 2015 is the first year that Parafed Otago has taken the reigns in running the Adaptive snow sports program and a lot of learning can be taken from the experience.

We are able to take 16 skiers up to Cadrona and the Remarkable’s over 3 weekends, with the conditions being fantastic on all but one of the days. The level of skill on show from our skiers and boarders was exceptional and everyone who skied with us at some point this year should be proud of their development.

We are fantastically supported by an amazing group of students from the School of Physical Education at the University of Otago. They injected such vibrancy and life into the program.

Cycling – For the first time we worked with Paralympics NZ and Cycling Otago to organise a cycling pathway event. The attendance over the 5 weeks we ran the program was great, Paralympics were able to do some speed and power tests and everybody involved was able to enjoy being out on their bikes and brilliant cycle ways that we have access to in Dunedin.

Boccia – Once again Boccia is a sport of great strength in Otago being incredibly well led by Paul Coffey. The South Island champs were incredibly well organised and a real winter highlight. The Team also did them self’s justice at the national champs bring home a host of awards and titles.

2016 and Beyond

Continuation of our development and changes to the way we promote and host our events, there is also going to be some changes to some of our programs.

We are aiming to relaunch the Wheelchair rugby program in the autumn, we are hoping to have an adept and knowledgeable group of player’s coaches and support staff around the sport to give us the best change at producing a team that is able to represent Otago.

Wheelchair basketball is a sport that has had a lot of focus in the past. We are looking at a concept that will enable those interested in the game more training and playing time. Keep an eye out for some exciting developments in the coming months!

Following on from the success of last year’s Junior Disability Games we have set some lofty aims for this year. We are hoping to take a team of about the same size but we are hoping to see an increase in the team ethic and the pre competition training opportunities. We have recently had some column inches in the Otago Daily times as well as some airtime on Dunedin TV. We are hoping to attract some new athletes to the wider games squad.

Overall we have been pleased with the shape this year has taken. It wouldn’t have been possible without the backing of our sponsors and the continued support of the Halberg Disability Sport foundation.

2015 Otago Adaptive Snow Sports Awards Evening.

With the ski season having drawn to a close 3 weeks ago the awards dinner provided a perfect opportunity to remember and recognise everybody’s achievements. He is surly one to watch for the future!

Following the presentation of the junior award was the serious business of the senior for 2015.

This award was given for the impressive skill development that Henderson Best has been working on this year. Her improvement has been remarkable and is a lesson to us all about how determination and hard work can pay off!

The penultimate award was for the skier who had added the most enthusiasm and energy into the program. The award went to Hunter Edgecombe for his infectious enjoyment as well as his impressive aptitude for skiing.

Finally the last award traditionally goes to the volunteer who has done the most to support the program. This is always a hard award to give as so many people give so much to the program.

It was decided that this year the award would go to Bridget Meyer for all her hard work over the past eight years. Without the enthusiasm and dedication that Bridget has put in to the adaptive program it could be argued that skiing would not have happened for so many of those who have been able to ski with the Otago Adaptive Program.

Bridget has taken a step back from the program but is still going to give a helping hand when it is needed.

ParaFed Otago Athletics Session

If you are aged 5-21, then come along and try out the Athletics session on Thursday the 8th of October from 1-3pm at the Edgar Centre.
